Dream or Reality - A New Bed

I see pretty rooms in magazines and catalogues and would love to have a picture perfect home.  The reality of it, is that I never feel like it's worth it to lay out a lot of money for the sake of decorating.  My dream is to have a well furnished home, but the truth is that I am cheap.

It's become apparent to me that I need a real bed and a new mattress.  The futon I'm sleeping on is not optimal, and I've been using it for four years.  I need something longer and with better support, which will be more comfortable for guests when needed.

Unfortunately, furniture shopping just isn't fun for me.  I choke on the price of things and the price of the items I dream about are realistically out of my price range.  Besides, to fully "decorate" the room, I'd need to paint it, pick out new floor covering, and just do a whole lot of stuff I have neither the time, energy or money to spend on right now.  I also don't have conventional taste so a lot of what's out there makes me gag.

I know I made fun of Wayfair and their commercial a week or so ago.  But that is where I went to order a bed frame and mattress.  The free shipping didn't hurt.  What I found was cheaper than I could have found in a brick and mortar store and I didn't have to feel uncomfortable walking into a store full of stuff priced too high for me to stomach.  I just didn't take the plunge and order everything I needed for a perfect room all at once.  The stuff will be delivered to TBG's warehouse and I'll put it in place when I have time over the next few months.

Now from the sounds of it, we are broke.  The truth is we're not!  There would be a lot more cash to drop on home furnishings if weren't saving so rigorously for retirement and committed to having an emergency fund.  My dream home will never be a reality -- but at least I won't have nightmares about overspending!

  1. I don' have the money, but lots of the furniture I see is just not my taste.

    1. For us, it's tough because we have a small house with small rooms. Everything is too big! There is no store I can think of where you can go "moderate" -- price-wise, or taste-wise. I guess it helps when there isn't a lot that you like -- you are less tempted to spend!

    2. I agree...furniture shopping is a chore. My taste runs different from what is in most stores as well. I like pieces from a specific period, and antique stores are exorbitant! I have found my favorite pieces at thrift shops or Craigist. Generally, I have wound up unhappy with the pieces purchased new--either I settled, or they don't hold up well. And, usually, when I have bitten the bullet and bought new, I find the exact thing I want soon after in the second hand market.

    3. I wish I had time for a "makeover" project and could search for something second hand. After realizing my back was beginning to suffer, I knew I had to stop putting it off. I'm hoping it all works out well!

  2. I havme a really weak back and about 10 years ago we realised we needed a new bed that would suit us both. My DH built us a superkingsize frame (6feet) and we had a mattress made. It is the best bed we have ever had in 45 years of marriage-very plain with white bedding and I love it! We struggle to buy furniture that is robust but not fancy and at reasonable cost and tend to put off doing anything because it usually ends in disappointment. Catriona

    1. My back has always been an issue, but I've had leg/feet issues recently and not having a full length bed aggravates that too. Getting old sucks!

  3. A good mattress is healthy. Yeah they are expensive, but can you put a price on a good nights sleep? We'll be looking for a new mattress, maybe next year.

I'm cheap too. But 2016 we had to get a new roof and decided, this would be our year, to fix and replace things in our home before we get too old. It's been a 11month project and we're hoping to come to an end, soon.

All my furniture are Craigslist finds or hodge podgy things, people have given me, or from the thrift stores. Paint does wonders for a simple home that needs a lift.

    1. This year we also replaced our roof and in the first half of next year I have a number of projects to make us nice and secure before retirement. Fingers crossed for a happy ending

    2. New roof = bank account killer!!! Stuff like that is why I don't like to over-spend on interior objects. You are always one home repair away from the edge!

  4. Aack! we need a new mattress too. Quite possibly a new bedframe as well.
But we sleep in a full size bed unheard now adays for couples. But we still sleep in the smallest room in the house. 9 x 12 a hold over from when our kids were still at home. We like our cozy little room. A big bed just won't fit there. Truth is we sleep comfortably in a smaller bed. But!!! not as comfortably as we would if we had a new mattress set. I'll probably check out Wayfair's prices! let us know how you like your new bed too. ;)

    1. The new bed and mattress are at TBG's warehouse. I have to wait until we have time/muscle to remove the old bed. Then when I open the new mattress, it will need a few days to "off-gas."

The room it's going in is very small, which is why I picked a metal frame with a slim head and foot board. I can't wait to set it up!

  5. I couldn't agree with you more. I would love to have a picture perfect home too, like what you see in the magazines, but realistically for most homeowners, that isn't possible. However, a decent bed and mattress is most important when it comes to upgrading or purchasing new furniture for your home since it affects your quality of life too!

  6. That's the truth! My wife and I would love to move to a new home, but we get so worried about how much furniture will cost to make our dream home look like a dream home! It's good to know there are companies out there to help with making a dream home a reality.
