White Tile

I hate the white tile on our kitchen counter.  We used to have it in the bathroom -- luckily it's gone now.  There is no way I will ever use white tile in a kitchen -- this was here when we bought the house, and I have been struggling to keep it clean ever since.  TBG did a good job of cleaning it a few weeks back, but he did it quickly and this is how it looked this week.

I've used a variety of methods to clean the grout.  This time, it was a paste made from equal parts bleach and baking soda.  I schmeared it on the grout and let it sit.  Next I scrubbed it with a toothbrush.  It was tedious and messy.   It doesn't look a lot cleaner in this shot, but it actually did a pretty good job.

Looking at it from further away shows that it is a lot cleaner.  I'll probably use this approach going forward.  It will be a while before we can renovate the kitchen, so I guess this will be a chore to add to my retirement repertoire.   Oh well, if I don't wait too long between cleanings, I should be able to keep the counter tops from getting too gross.  However, this won't be fun!

  1. Heh. We are currently building a place. Two of my demands: No carpet, and no grout! Tile is beautiful, but grout.....aaaaargh!

    1. There was a time when having a tile countertop was so desirable! I know it can look nice new, but after a while....

  2. You may want to try a grout paint, then follow with a grout a sealer which will help keep the grout from getting stained between deep cleanings. I've never tried it but my neighbor said it worked well for her bathroom. I had a tile kitchen counter in my house in PA. It was blue tile with gray grout, but it looked black most of the time. I hated it!

    1. I was going to look into something like that, or even taking my Dremel to it and removing the grout, then re-grouting it. Your suggestion sounds easier. Thanks!

  3. Luckily, I have never had tile or grout to deal with. I was going to say something similar to what clamco said.

    1. I'm going to take Lorraine's suggestion and try to paint it. Otherwise, I'll have to do this every week!

  5. Totally with you. I don't understand the whole idea of using tile on a countertop. It's hard enough to keep a smooth surface clean, let alone all of that grout.

A dear friend of mine had a kitchen counter that had been tiled with tiny mosaic tiles. And to make matters worse, they had all of these little sharp edges that would completely shred whatever you tried to use to clean the stuff. She called it the kitchen that could not be cleaned. I don't think I've ever seen someone as happy about laminate as she was when they finally re-did the kitchen!
