Teddy's surgery is tomorrow. TBG is bringing her in at 8AM. She will stay over night. After that, she will be living the restricted life for 12 weeks, the first six to eight being the worst. At first, she will be in The Cone of Shame. After that, I hope the Doughnut of Sadness will do. Stairs are off limits for the full 12 weeks so we have set up a futon between the dining and living rooms. We will barricade her in with chairs, ottomans and other obstructive pieces. Here she is on the futon getting used to it.
We've had mild weather so she's been swimming since the weekend, but she won't be allowed back in the water for another ten weeks -- and at that point, only on leash or in a very controlled way. I have read up on the post-operative care and PT regimen we will have to follow and I can say that I am not looking forward to it.
I have to work tomorrow because I have obligatory training all afternoon. Then I took off Thursday. As bad luck would have it, I broke a tooth this evening so I'll have to deal with that while this is going on.
Please keep my old girl in your thoughts, prayers and whatever it is you do to send out good vibes. I know we are doing the right thing, but a mom worries whether her baby has two legs or four!
And, what problem does she have and what kind of surgery. I'm sorry I don't remember. It sounds serious, and of course she won't understand at all.
ReplyDeleteHi Alex, Is this surgery on her ACL? I am the person who questioned you back in December about how you knew it was a torn ACL as our lab was injured. Well our dog did have surgery early December so we through with her post op care but I must say that it wasn't too bad once you get on a routine of walking (and increasing as prescribed). I did talk to our ACL surgeon (after you mentioned a friend's dogs failed surgery due to reinjury) and he assured me that with the surgery our lab had, there is a 0 percent chance of reinjuring the ACL again. Our dog had a TPLO surgery and she's doing well. We just have to watch the "running" around as she injured it running on the cement street. Surgeon said these dogs are prone to injuring the other ACL after injuring one. Oh one more thing: Get teddy the new "doughnut" that looks more like a black tire and it gets blown up. So much better than the cone and is so much more comfortable for them. Just my opinion, that was successful for my doggy. Good luck. Please update on Teddy in the future.
ReplyDeleteI will send prayers to St. Francis, and all the saints for your beloved pup, and for you to have strength. I will light a candle too. Peace, Alex.
ReplyDeletePoor Teddy. Wishing her a fast and painless recovery.
ReplyDeleteBig hugs to both Teddy and you...
ReplyDeleteI didn't know Teddy was having surgery. How did I miss this? Prayers that all goes well with her and that you and TBG handle it well, too. I know what you mean about being concerned and nervous. I was a wreck when my dogs got spayed/neutered.
ReplyDeleteI just saw this post. I suppose by now Teddy is post-op. I hope it all went well. I can't think of a better, more devoted dog mom than you. Sending healing thoughts.
