When we first moved in
Our first efforts at decorating -- putting our old stuff into the room.
The next step - painting the walls and getting rid of the window treatments. Rotating in different methods of covering the couch cushion to protect from our sloppy habits and a dog.
This is where we are today. Custom blinds are what we wanted all along. Those were a splurge last year. I gave up on the mish-mash of furniture covering ploys and bought two new plush blankets. We hope to have someone make custom slip covers. At that point, those blankets will be for guests. The new furniture really makes a big difference. It has taken a while, but we feel like we've made good progress. We are no longer eating dinner on the living room table in front of the TV. I plan to take good care of the new stuff!
I love the way the window trim shows now. I embiggened the picture so I could see all the details. NICE! Is that an old school map? Love it.
ReplyDeleteYes, one is North America, the other South America. We think circa 1930 but it's hard to tell. We still get hung up looking at them! I do like seeing the contrast of the window trim too. Thank you for the kind words!
Deleteon my maps I looked at all that was written, googled it, and then I knew the date. There are even pictures of the old maps so you can be sure.
DeleteWe tried to see what we could determine from the publishing material, but ended up looking at populations reported to narrow it down to the 30's. They showed cities and ranked their population and it is interesting to see shifts over time!
DeleteReally I love the old curtains? You could have made a dress with them, carol, carol? come back here...
ReplyDeleteThey were pinch pleated drapes so the rod in the shoulder sure would hurt a lot! I just finished a book from the library and the author listed what he thought were the best 100 dresses. The dress you mention made the list! I saw it in the window... and I just had to have it!!!
DeleteYour home looks very comfortable. I love the bar! Thank you for letting me have this peek inside!
ReplyDeleteThe canoe came from a Mennonite shop outside of Watertown, NY and I doubt they envisioned it as a liquor station but it works great!
DeleteI LOVE the window coverings. I bought one cellular blind last year to see how it would stand up to the Smoky treatment, and while he's ruffled the corners a bit, he hasn't torn it, so I think that's the direction I'll be going.
ReplyDeleteAnd I finally caved in and bought some real slip covers for my furniture and have been much happier since. I rigged some fitted sheet straps under the cushions which makes them stay in place pretty well, but they're still easy to take off and wash. The best part is that they're a microfiber fabric which the cats don't find terribly attractive as a scratching surface. So Smoky and I have finally reached an agreement - he's free to go under the slip covers and scratch the dead upholstery at will, but he leaves the slip covers alone. Peace in our time! :-)
The blinds are a faux wood and they are very durable. I could have done a better job of lining up the slats for my picture, but the dog bangs them with her nose and they get knocked out of line!
DeleteI love the maps! Your new living room looks cozy and comfortable.
ReplyDeleteComfort is a must -- we like things to look good, but not so good you're afraid to live in it!
DeleteWhat a stylish room, homely with lots of interesting bits to look out. I'd happily move it!
ReplyDeleteI do think homes need to evolve over time. Rooms furnished with stuff brought at the same time from the same old shops (Ikea, I'm looking at you!) end up looking flat and soulless. Objects need to be picked up over time and chosen with love. xxx
The room took sort of a Mid-Century modern turn without our even planning it. It is nice when something takes you by surprise. Planning is over-rated!
DeleteI made a jacket from curtains. It was a hit at a Christmas Day dinner.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking of making seat covers in the "new" old Mercedes using curtains. I'm going to start looking in the thrifts... Just DO NOT let TBG know!
