55 Going on 15...

Does this look like the bedside table belonging to a 55 year old woman?  Well, it ought to because it's mine!  My birthday was last week on Tuesday.  There was a present waiting for me in the kitchen from Teddy -- a yellow dog solar light.  TBG told me I'd have to wait until the 5th for his present for me to be delivered.  At first I was worried, because he came home with a new Viper toilet for the basement.  Turns out he secretly brought in two nightstands before I got home!

Having acquired new pieces for "my" bedroom, meant I needed to put them to use.  That meant storing things in the drawers.  As it turned out, I had some items from my desk at my old job that didn't make it to the new job.  Stuff like that drink cozy and "My kids have paws" block in the picture above.  I also used to collect butterfly clips.  They were my way to keep my place in the myriad of binders and notepads a person needs to have at a bank.   With no use for them at work, I decided to use them over my bed -- proving that my inner child is most likely a 15 year old teenager.  TBG has not seen this yet and he's sure to hate it almost as much as the old nightstands the new pieces replace.  He hated those too.  Yes, I have a man who buys me furniture because he doesn't approve of my stuff (that's how we got our dining room table... an anniversary present).

I am not going to be featured in a magazine spread or on any home design blog.  But I don't care.  These days I lead a very stressful grown up life and if I want to come home and sleep in a bed that reminds me of a stage in my life where I didn't have anxious clients, regulatory obligations, and technical glitches all day -- well, who is to say that is a bad thing? In fact, I think that's what we should all do!

When it's all said and done, the set of two small bedside pieces will be a nice addition to my room.  I now have more storage space -- a place to hide my nook charger, tissues, scrunchies, antacids, Benadryl and all sorts of assorted stuff I used to stack by my bed.  I swear one of these days I'll grow up but for now, I'm just going to get ready for bed!

  1. I love those night tables. I hear and read about getting furniture that is not solid like those, something with a top and legs to make a room look airy. Fooey on that, give me storage space. Are you going to post a picture of what he hated? Did the two of you merge two homes of furniture? If he does not like butterflies, maybe your little butterfly-loving self can flit away. lol. I like pinks, not sickening but flowers and prints. Any guy would just have to overlook my preferences. It is not a frou frou look, just pretty to me. Ha, glad it was not a toilet you got for your birthday. Of course, if your only toilet did not work, a toilet with a bow on it would be perfect.

    1. The toilet is installed but I have not had an opportunity to use it. I've got pictures of the old side table on this blog so I will have to dig them up. I've cleared up floor space by fitting stuff in the drawers so it actually has helped me de-clutter!

  2. Well, I think the way you decorate is lovely, and needs no justification. I impose my decor preferences on my dh. I need a clear, bright open bedroom, all white, cotton bedding, with nothing on the flat surfaces, and the windows unadorned. I love looking out at the stars, and seeing the moonlight shine in the room. Fortunately for me, he has no concept of decorating, so goes along. I have, though, spoiled him for bed linens. I have to have excellent quality bedding. He didn't appreciate it, though, until he went on a trip! Now he agrees there is no turning back.

    1. Men are funny like that. Mine would only wear 100% cotton shirts when I met him yet slept on blended sheets. Once I showed him the difference, he refused to go back to synthetic blends!

  3. I love the night stands, so much better than a viper toilet, which one could also use as a night stand if the lid were down. Think of the storage capacity. Hmmmmm..... Happy belated birthday.

    1. I finally got to use the toilet, and it works great! I also was able to fill up one of the night stands completely -- and it cleared one who mass of clutter in bins sitting on the floor. Woo-hoo!!!

  4. Happy birthday, Alex. Nice gifts from TBG. I'm with you in the not-act-my-age category. It dawned on me a couple weeks ago that all my flannel pajamas are dog-themed. And I'm almost 20 years older than you.
