Table to Window

After the installation of a new window and the acquisition of  a new bed, something had to be done to at least do a little decorating.  I'm not ready to spend any money in this room.  The new bed was a sleep/orthopedic purchase, the head and foot board a small splurge.  My challenge was to reach a drape solution but not spend any money.
The solution was to put a table cloth and scarf to work.  A table cloth is at least thick enough to filter most of the light that a spare scrap of fabric I tried did not.  My scarf just adds a little more embellishment to make it seem intentional that I wasn't using traditional window treatments.  Besides, I like layering and I hadn't worn this scarf in a while.
My night table was the main reason I had chosen a black metal headboard.  The two pieces tie together so I didn't have to get a new piece.  Black is the color that unites.  On the bed, the comforter and skirt are predominately orange.  I picked the green scrap of fabric to add a little bit of pattern but also a contrast.
I am not claiming any sort of style accomplishment here.  My bedside table at this point is functional -- it is a place to hold everything I need during the night... reading glasses I can quickly grab to see the face of the clock, Nivea cream for chapped lips and dried elbows, a glass of water for pills and night time thirstiness.  Maybe I'll take a can of spray paint to the Nivea tin and paint it black.

It's not glamorous or truly "decorated," but the stuff on the window keeps out the light without looking to ugly.  I can live with that!

  1. I think it looks great. And I say that as a person who cannot bear to have windows covered, especially when I sleep. I use blinds on west facing windows to keep the sun out of our eyes, (which get opened the minute the sun sets) and swags to soften the frames. But, wow, your "non-drapes" are pretty! You have a knack.

    1. Well thank you! One day when I really "decorate" the room, I'll do something "legitimate." I liked this solution because I didn't have to sew either!

  2. I like to attach to my window panes rice paper (there are various background colors and designs; I prefer the light colored ones as it brightens the room and makes it look bigger.). This decorative paper efficiently keeps the sun rays out, lets the light in, but keeps the interior opaque to the outside. Just ideal.

    1. I like that idea! I didn't do that in this room because I like to look out to see if there is snow on the ground! I do have another window that would work great on. Thanks for the tip!

  3. I like that you used creativity by implementing some contrasting patterns. Color can be used to tie different patterns together. The scarf does a good job of that for the window. You could probably do something similar to make the night stand mesh with the room more, by perhaps overlapping with an orange pattern. You could even use contact paper to put a pattern on the Nivea box since you were considering painting it already.
