Culinary Tools

I have needed a potato/tomato masher for some time.   There is probably one in a box in the garage that I have yet to unpack, but that doesn't help me now that it's summer and I am making fresh marinara.  Rather than heading to Target, I knew I'd do better at a thrift store.  I ducked into Amvets last Thursday and found this one for 79 cents.  The saute pan was a separate purchase on Saturday.

I had wanted a second saute pan and had been coveting those made by Cuisinart for years.  The brand I have is Revere and I purchased it as a set.  It is of a lower quality but it was what I could afford twenty years ago when I bought it.  With all the cooking I do, I often need two pans this size at the same time.  This one was $3.98 and it appeared to be nearly unused.

The pans I have slightly warped on the bottom.  It's a quality issue.  The bottom of my Cuisinart pan is completely flat.  It is also less likely to warp because it is a higher quality. Now that we have a conduction cook top, the flat bottom is important.

I've already used this pan a couple of times and am very happy with it.  Of course people think you only get worn out or cheap stuff at thrifts, but the rest of us know it's a great way to get something high quality that you never would be able to spend money on in the retail world.

While I don't recommend buying plastic kitchen utensils at a thrift (unless they are totally unused), stainless steel is a winner.  It's not easy to find good, affordable stainless steel products at a low price at retail, which is why a thrift store is my first choice.
